Patristics: A Study Notes
This course will introduce the history, theology, and spirituality of the patristic period from the death of the apostles to the pontificate of Pope Saint Gregory the Great (A.D.600). This course will provide an overview of both the theological thought of the Fathers of the Church and their life and writings (“Patrology”).
This course will be comprised of two sections, the first part will be on Greek Church Fathers dealing on the controversies and doctrines of Christology. The course look at some of the Greek Fathers and their own writings. The second part will deal with the Latin Western Church Fathers on dealing with the Doctrine of Trinity. It will focus on Latin Fathers as Tertullian, Cyprian, Augustine, and Jerome, and Hilary of Poitiers.
Selected patristic texts will be studied and discussed: the majority of these will be primary sources taken from their own writings. In this way, student’s ongoing prayerful study of these texts in the liturgy will provide a deepening re-acquaintance with the early source of Christian spirituality and doctrine.
