​"세상에서 죽어야 할 자들은 누구인가?”

저자는 1971년도에 로스엔젤레스로 가족과 함께 이민을 온 코리안-어메리칸 이민자이다. 미국에서 중고 대를 나오고 미국에서50년간 산자로서 미국에서 많은 경험을 했으며 (또한 영어로 자서전도 출판함)이 번 일도 그냥 넘어가려고 했다. 이번 애틀랜타 총기 사건 뉴스 보도를 듣고 아시안으로서 조용히 넘어가려고 했으나 저자의 마음은 편치가 않았다. 그래서 몇 가지의 느낀 점과 혹시 위로와 도움이 될 가해서 투고를 하고자 한다.
저자의 글의 주장은 세상에서 죽어야 할 자들은 누구이며 또한 죽음을 어떻게 받아들여야 하는 것이다.
그리고 여 덞명의 죽음이 나에게 준 영향은 무엇인가이다.
 
첫 번째 느낌 마음은 죽음이다.  오늘날 같이 이렇게 죽음이 우리 곁에 가까이 있는 때는 드문 것 같다. 일 년 전의 코로나 사태로 세상은 변했고 또한 죽음에 대한 인식 또한 변했다. 죽음이 친숙해짐은 사실이다. 우리는 항상 죽을 준비를 하고 살아야 한다.
특히 우선 이번 애틀랜타 총기 사건으로 귀한 생명을 잃은 피해자들에게 위로를 보내고 싶다. 그리고 이들의 부모와 형제자매 등친지들에게도 위로와 안정이 찾아오기를 기도한다. 이 들의 죽음은 저자에게 너무나 친숙하게 다가왔다.  우리는 죽을 준비를 항상 해야 한다는 인식을 확실하게 느꼈다.
 
두 번째 느낌 마음은 이들의 죽음은 절대로 헛되지 않으리라는 것이다.
이들의 죽음은 우리로 하여금 죽음을 어떻게 받아 드려야 하는 생각을 하게 하였다.
모든 생명은 귀한 것이다. 우리의 삶은 우리가 택한 것이 아니다. 그리고 우리가 함부로 생명을 앗아가서도 안 되는 것이다. 우리는주어진 삶을 바로 살아야 하는 책임이 있다.
여 덞 명의 짧다면 짧은 삶을 산 이 피해자들은 세상에서 존경이나 영향을 주는 위치에 있는 자들이 아니었으나 이들의 죽음은 세상을 사는 우리에게 다시금 생각과 결심을 하게 만들었다. 미국과 세상은 이제 이 들의 죽음으로 말미암아 변할 것이고 또 변해야한다. 문제는 어떻게 변해야 한다. 각자의 생각과 행동에 달려있다.
또한 이들의 죽음이 정당화됐는가 나 자신에게 질문하고 싶다.
이들의 삶의 목적은 부귀도 아니고 명예도 아니고 지위에 대한 사랑이나 우정도 아닌  그 당시 주어진 삶을 산 것뿐이었다. 이제는이들에게는 더 나은 삶에 대한 회복의 기회가 돌아오지 않는다. 이들이 하지 못한 숙제를 우리가 풀어야 할 것이다. 나는 매일 죽는다고 말한 사도처럼 매일 옛사람의 모습을 버리고 새 삶을 맞이하는 삶을 살아야 할 것이다. 누구는 말하기를 삶과 죽음은 종이 한장 차이라고 한다. 이제 우리의 숙제는 과연 우리는 어떻게 살고 어떻게 죽을 준비를 하고 사는 가이다.

He focuses on researching Church Fathers, Korean-American immigrant history, and missions. Martyr's Descendant: A Story of Vowed Son was published in the spring of 2019 and was his autobiographical novel that tells of how he found himself.
