어두움에 거하시는 하나님 He Would Dwell In A Dark Cloud

20년 전에 홀아버지가 된 나는 헤매면서 섬겼던 목회 사역을 접고 집에서 딸을 키우면서 픽업 사이사이에 성경을 다시 읽기 시작했다.
살아오면서 읽고 암기하고, 배우며, 가르치고 또한 설교로 사용했던 성경이 처음으로 새롭게 읽히기 시작했다.
솔직히 성경을 몇 번 읽었느냐 얼마나 아느냐는 이제 나에게는 중요한 질문이 아니다.
오랜 세월이 가르쳐 주는 것은 성경을 읽는다는 자체가 매우 힘든 노동이며 또한 성경을 연구한다는 것은 더욱 힘든 고통이다. 그래서 나는 젊은이들에게 노세 노세 젊어서 노세 늙어지면 못노나니가 아니라  젊어서성경을 읽으세 늙어지면 못 읽게되나니라고 가르치고 싶다.

이제 글의 주제로 들어간다.
성경은 하나님께서 어두움 (캄캄한, He Would Dwell In A Dark Cloud)에 거하신다고 말씀한다 (왕상 8:12; 대하 6:1). 이 말씀은 우리가 잘 알지 못하는 구절이다. 솔로몬왕은 7년 동안 건축한 성전을 언급하면서 여호와 하나님앞에서 성전 낙성식에서 드린 고백기도이다. 셀수 없이 많은 금과 은과 각종 향목과 보석으로 세워진 훌륭한 성전이었지만 솔로몬은 창조주 하나님 앞에서는 보잘것없는 집이라고 말하면서 캄캄한 구름 속에 나타나신 것을 말해 주고 있다. 이렇게 찬란한 성전에 대해서는 말 한 마디없이 어두움 속에 나타나는 에너지를 하나님의 임재로 묘사하고 있다. 그리고  인간 모두는  빛을 좋아하고 화려한 것을 찾고 또한 부정적인 것 보다는 밝은 것을 택하는 경향이있다. 그러면 성경은 왜 하나님께서는 어두움에 거한다고 말씀하시는가?

어두움이 주는 의미는 침묵과 고요이다. 그리고 에너지의 결합이다. 행동이 없고 다만 내 영혼이 수동적으로 어두움 속에 휩싸이는 상태이다.
그리고 어두움은 욕망을 흡수해 버린다. 인간의 모든 정욕을 해방시켜주는 상태이다. 구름 또는 연기는 영적인 상태를 말해 준다. 하나님 앞에서는 물질적인 것보다는 영적인 의미가 더욱 중요하다는 것을 가르쳐 주는 교훈이다.

16세기의 신비주의자인 십자가의 요한은 그의 저서인 “어두운 밤”에서 “어느 어두운 밤에 사랑에 타 할딱이며 좋을씨고 행운이여 알 이 없이 나왔노라 내 집은 이미 고요해지고” (어두운 밤 번역:레전더의 성역)
십자기의 요한은 영적인 단계에서 첫 번째 해야 할 것은 자신을 세상의 모든 염려와 근심과 분주함에서 벗어나야 한다고 말한다.
그럴 때 이제 다음 단계로 올라갈 수 있다고 말한다.

동방 정교회의 수도사인 그레고리 팔라마스 (14세기)는 헤시키즘의 대 영성가이다. 헤시키아는 헬라어로 침묵이라는 뜻을 가지고 있음. 그리스의 앗토스섬에서 일생동안  수도를 한 그레고리는 하나님의 본질은 알 수 없거나 에너지에 참여할 수 있다고 가르친다. 예수의 기도(Jesus Prayer)를 하면서 자신의 자아를 내려놓고 무야의 상태에서 빛을 본다고 한다. 물론 하나님을 만나 보는 것이 아니라 은혜 (에너지)를 체험하는 것이다.
십자가의 요한이나 그레고리 팔라마스가 말해주는 것은 신앙생활은 그냥 생기는 것이 아니라 여러 단계가 있다는 것과 (마치 아기가 성장하는 단계가 있는 것처럼) 또한 집중적인 노력과 의지가 포함되어야 한다. 세상의 모든 걸작품은 오랜 세월의 준비와 노력의 합작인 것처럼 신앙성장도 서로 격려해야 하고 반응을 보여야 한다고 본다.
이제 2022년도 20일이 안 남았지만, 베렌도 침례교회 멤버들은 다가오는 모임에 열심히 동참해서 서로 그리스도의 에너지 (사랑)을 나누었으면 바란다. 이것이 성경이 말해 주는 어두움속에서 주님을 만나는 수단이 될 수 있다.  오래전에 요한 복음서를 공부할때 밤에 찾아온 니고데모를 연상케 한다.
