Introduction:
Unlike Eastern Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church’s long traditions, Christianity in Korea is a recent phenomenon. Roman Catholic Church in Korea goes back about two hundred and fifty-some years; Protestant Churches in Korea goes back about 140 years with the arrival of missionaries including Henry Appenzeller, Horace G. Underwood, Horace Allen, and William B. Scranton, and Mary F. Scranton.
Yet Korean Christianity is unique in the sense that being an Asian believer, she adopted mainly Western Christianity namely Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. With rapid growth and expansions, due to fervent prayers and evangelism, Korean churches and believers became widely known throughout the world.
Just like the early Christian believers, Korean believers suffered persecutions and produced numerous martyrs throughout their short history. Today Korea is a prosperous and developed country, yet Korean Churches and believers have seen static or declining in members.
This phenomenon is similar in Koran churches in America. With many prayers and discussions, EastWest Bible Institute was launched to rekindle and awake believers.
Korean believers need to step into a Middle Age or Second phase of Church history. We have passed through the early church period as mentioned. We need to steep into learning and studying the Word of God more in-depth and grow into the mature stage in the Christian journey.
We have many resources and information and materials available online and internets. We aim to introduce and engage with believers such resources.
Middle Ages in Western Europe (A.D. 5th century- A. D. 16th century)has many faces and tales (both positives and negatives): the founding of monasteries, universities, colleges, convents, and Crusades, the Founding of the New World, and rapid development of trades and commercial endeavors.
We believe that Korean churches and believers are faced with such challenges and work ahead. We want to steer our brothers and sisters with some guidance and information based on Bible, Christian monasticism, and Martyr’s writings and teachings.
So here is what we stand for:
- Who We Are: Followers of Christ.
- What We Teach: Biblical Monastic Spirituality
- How We do it: Everyday worship and prayer and works (Mission and Education)
- Why We do it: Christ commands it. (Rev. 2: 10)
In summary, EastWest Bible Institute is a branch of Martyr Sukbaknam Monastery ministry.
- We are biblical.
- We acknowledge both the Old and New Testament of the Bible as the Word of God and contain God’s Will and Prophecy.
- We are striving to follow and focus on the monastic tradition including desert Fathers and hermits who dwelt in caves and mountains. (Monasticism)
- We strive to live and work and be as worshiping praying warriors in the world.
